Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The economist stated he would withdraw from public duties after legislative body released his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.

The economist commented in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".

Summers, who once headed Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The recently released emails revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his determination to step down.

"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the organization stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement follows after the two houses of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on the case.

The measure will afterward proceed to the office of President Trump for signature. The President has indicated he intends to approve the legislation, after modifying his position on the matter following objections from his supporters.

Message Details

A group of financier-linked messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned several prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The communications revealed that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to link Summers to prominent international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were released with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to restore faith and repair relationships with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as leader of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He headed the university from five years and remains a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles earlier on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the organization.

He joined the board of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO Sam Altman.
