Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Star Leaves Egotism Outside.

One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require the involvement of the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to blend into the game plans and squad hierarchies required with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.

The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Skill is important but England have learned the hard way that there is a cost when celebrity dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder was given food for thought after his omission of the recent team selection. He observed the national side secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel talk about loving the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, he has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. He had to be picked; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is unafraid to drop big names.

“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German stated. “Bellingham displays a competitive streak. You need a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone must help him and build an environment which he can use his drive towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

The star dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches against Serbia and the other. Any other news? Well, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after his display in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.

The question, though, is how to use the various creators at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to pick Cole Palmer once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s game in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. The coach wants him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this vision regarding him for years. I think it suits him the most.”

He agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defend?

Tuchel mentioned one star making runs for tap-ins and the other drilling in strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue abounds.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to score in a friendly win against Scotland in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point at some point it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be watching him closely. Leave the ego at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an even better one.
