Tragedy Occurs as Accidental Detonation at Law Enforcement Facility in Indian-administered Kashmir Results in Nine Fatalities
A devastating blast at a security post in Indian-administered Kashmir has led to the deaths of nine people and wounding to thirty-two more, according to police declarations.
The incident took place when a cache of seized explosive materials accidentally blew up during management operations.
Timeline of Events
The blast occurred on Friday night at the Nowgam security post, where blast substances confiscated in the Faridabad area in the northern state of Haryana state were being held provisionally.
Local law enforcement head announced that the detonation substances were scheduled for forensic examination when a "very unfortunate" incident during processing resulted in their detonation at approximately 23:20 local time.
Authority Statements
Law enforcement officials asserted that this was an "unintentional explosion" and as opposed to a terrorist attack. "Any other speculation regarding the cause of this event is unwarranted," stressed the law enforcement head during a press briefing.
The law enforcement facility endured extensive destruction from the blast, with neighboring structures also being influenced by the powerful blast.
Aftermath and Fatalities
Multiple vehicles were "consumed by fire and reduced to charred husks, with wreckage spread across the area," according to police accounts.
"The intensity of the blast was such that some human remains were retrieved from adjacent homes, approximately 100-200 metres away the police station," reported an official source.
The bulk of the casualties were security officials, along with scientific examination staff, two crime scene photographers, and a garment worker who was present with the personnel.
Administration Reaction
The region's Regional Leader expressed condolences and confirmed that an investigation had been directed into the devastating event.
"I have directed a probe to determine the reason of the unintentional blast. Deeply anguished by the loss of precious lives due to extremely tragic unintentional explosion at Nowgam police station in Srinagar. My commiserations to the grieving relatives. I pray for speedy recovery of the harmed," wrote the leader on online channels.
